WORLD TSUNAMI AWARENESS DAY: 5 Nov: Be tsunami ready

World Tsunami Awareness Day 2026 (5 November): Theme, Inamura-no-hi Story and India’s Warning System

Quick answer: The UN marks World Tsunami Awareness Day every 5 November. For 2026 the theme is “Be tsunami ready: Resilience starts with you”, stressing what people and local communities can do before official warnings or help arrive.

Why World Tsunami Awareness Day is in the news

The day falls today, 5 November 2026. The United Nations observance page says this year’s theme is about personal and community readiness: knowing escape routes, practising drills and reacting to natural warning signs. The 2025 observance was the 10th, marked by a call from UN Secretary-General António Guterres to invest in preparedness.

Key facts about World Tsunami Awareness Day

  • Date: 5 November every year.
  • Created by: UN General Assembly Resolution 70/203, adopted on 22 December 2015.
  • Proposed by: Japan.
  • Facilitated by: the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), with the wider UN system.
  • 2026 theme: “Be tsunami ready: Resilience starts with you”.
  • Campaign: #GetToHighGround, launched by UNDRR in 2022 to promote evacuation-route drills.
  • Toll: the UN says 58 tsunamis in 100 years killed over 260,000 people, the worst being the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

The story behind 5 November: Inamura-no-hi

The date comes from a Japanese tale known as Inamura-no-hi, “The Fire of Rice Sheaves”. The Cabinet Office of Japan says it is based on the tsunami that followed the Great Ansei Earthquake of 1854. Goryo Hamaguchi of Hirogawa in Wakayama Prefecture felt a long tremor, saw the sea pulling back, and set fire to his own rice sheaves. Villagers ran uphill to fight the fire and so escaped the wave. UNDRR’s Japan office has said the date was picked as a “forward-looking” day when early action saved lives, not the anniversary of a disaster.

How a tsunami forms and the warning signs

The word joins Japanese tsu (harbour) and nami (wave). A tsunami is a train of huge waves set off by sudden vertical movement of the sea floor, usually an undersea earthquake; volcanic eruptions, submarine landslides and, rarely, asteroid impacts can also trigger one. Waves can arrive every 5 to 60 minutes for hours, and the first is often not the largest.

Natural warning signWhat to do
Strong or unusually long ground shaking near the coastMove to high ground or inland at once
Sudden fall or rise in sea levelDo not go to look at the exposed seabed
A loud roar from the seaLeave without waiting for an official alert

India’s tsunami warning system: INCOIS and ITEWC

When the 2004 waves struck, killing over 10,000 people in India according to IANS, the Indian Ocean had no real-time warning network. India’s answer was the Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC), run by INCOIS, Hyderabad, an institution of the Ministry of Earth Sciences. PTI reported that it was dedicated to the nation in October 2007 at a cost of Rs 125 crore.

  • It watches the two tsunami-generating zones near India: the Andaman-Sumatra subduction zone and the Makran coast in the Arabian Sea.
  • It uses seismic stations, open-ocean Bottom Pressure Recorders (BPRs) and coastal tide gauges (6 BPRs and 25 gauges in a 2014 Lok Sabha reply).
  • Per the same reply, it can detect a tsunami-causing earthquake within about 10 minutes and send advisories within about 20 minutes, by email, fax, SMS and website.
  • It advises other Indian Ocean rim countries as a Regional Tsunami Service Provider.

Globally, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, adopted in March 2015, replaced the Hyogo Framework agreed in Kobe weeks after the 2004 disaster.

Exam angle: how NDA, CDS and CAPF can ask this

  • For CAPF and CDS, know INCOIS (Hyderabad, Ministry of Earth Sciences) and the Sendai Framework.
  • Coastal disaster preparedness is a common SSB group discussion and CAPF essay topic.
