SOMALIA HORN OF AFRICA: UN mission ends after three decades

Somalia: UN Political Mission Ends; Map Facts, Indian Navy Anti-Piracy Role and AU Missions

Quick answer: Somalia is the easternmost country of Africa, occupying the Horn of Africa between the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean, with Mogadishu as its capital. It is in the news because the UN Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) ceased operations on 31 October 2026, closing more than three decades of UN political missions in the country.

Why Somalia is in the news

UNTMIS completed its two-year transition and shut down on 31 October 2026 under UN Security Council resolutions 2753 (2024) and 2809 (2025), at the request of the Federal Government of Somalia, the UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson said. Its tasks have been handed to Somali institutions and to UN agencies, funds and programmes, which remain in the country. The Secretary-General called for continued support against Al-Shabaab.

UNTMIS was set up by resolution 2753 on 30 October 2024 and began work on 1 November 2024, replacing the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), which had run since June 2013. UN missions in Somalia go back to the UNOSOM operations of 1992. The closure does not affect the African Union’s separate force, AUSSOM, whose mandate runs to 31 December 2026 unless extended.

  • Independent Somalia was formed in 1960 by joining a former Italian colony and a British protectorate.

Indian Navy anti-piracy operations since 2008

  • India has kept a warship on anti-piracy patrol in the Gulf of Aden since October 2008. By November 2010 more than 1,300 ships had been escorted, the Defence Minister told Parliament.
  • By February 2024 the Navy had escorted 3,440 ships and over 25,000 seafarers in the Gulf of Aden and off the east coast of Africa, according to the Ministry of Defence.
  • MV Ruen, March 2024: INS Kolkata intercepted the hijacked ship about 260 nm east of Somalia. After a 40-hour operation, supported by INS Subhadra, P-8I aircraft and MARCOS commandos air-dropped from a C-17, all 35 pirates surrendered on 16 March 2024 and 17 crew were rescued, about 1,400 nm from the Indian mainland.

Exam angle: how NDA, CDS and CAPF can ask this

  • NDA geography often asks which country borders Somalia or which water body lies to its north; Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and the Gulf of Aden are the answers to remember.
  • Questions on Indian Navy roles such as anti-piracy patrols and “first responder” operations suit CDS and AFCAT general awareness.
  • Peacekeeping and AU mission names (AMISOM, ATMIS, AUSSOM) are good statement-based items.
