PROJECT 18A: Next-gen stealth destroyers get DAC nod

Project 18A: DAC Clears Indian Navy’s Next-Generation Stealth Destroyers

Quick answer: Project 18A (also called Project 18 or the Next Generation Destroyer programme) is the Indian Navy’s plan for a new class of large stealth guided-missile destroyers that will follow the Visakhapatnam class. It is in the news because the Defence Acquisition Council, chaired by Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh, cleared “major naval platforms” on 26 October 2026, and media reports say this included in-principle approval for these destroyers at a cost of more than ₹75,000 crore.

Why Project 18A is in the news

On 26 October 2026, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) to capital acquisition proposals worth about ₹2.12 lakh crore for the three Services, according to a Press Information Bureau release from the Ministry of Defence. For the Navy, the release named an Active Offboard Decoy System and “other major Naval platforms” that will be designed and built in India. It also said that roughly 82% of the cleared value will be procured from Indian industry.

The official release did not name the warship project. A Times of India report, carried by Indian Defence News on 28 October, identified it as Project 18A and said the destroyers would be heavier than 10,000 tonnes. NewsBytes (27 October) put the cost at over ₹75,000 crore, while an earlier ET Now report cited by idrw.org had estimated the programme at about ₹80,000 crore for four ships. The exact number of ships and the final cost are therefore still unconfirmed.

Key facts about Project 18A

  • Type: stealth guided-missile destroyer, the next step after the Visakhapatnam class (Project 15B).
  • Designer: the Navy’s in-house Warship Design Bureau.
  • Size: reported displacement of more than 10,000 tonnes, against about 7,400 tonnes (full load) for a Visakhapatnam-class ship.
  • Approval stage: AoN by the DAC on 26 October 2026, which is only in-principle approval; tendering and contract signing come later.
  • Timeline: reports say deliveries could begin 5 to 10 years after the contract is signed, and that a competitive bid among Indian shipyards is likely.
  • Likely builders: Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) have long been seen as leading contenders.
  • Planned features (as reported, not final): integrated electric propulsion and a large battery of vertical launch cells for surface-to-air and cruise missiles.

How the Navy’s destroyer lines have grown

India’s modern destroyers have come in successive “projects”. The table places Project 18A in that line.

ProjectClassShipsStatus
Project 15Delhi classINS Delhi, INS Mysore, INS MumbaiIn service
Project 15AKolkata classINS Kolkata, INS Kochi, INS ChennaiIn service
Project 15BVisakhapatnam classINS Visakhapatnam, INS Mormugao, INS Imphal, INS SuratIn service; built by MDL under a January 2011 contract; about 75% indigenous content
Project 18ANext Generation DestroyerNumber not officially announcedAoN reported on 26 Oct 2026

INS Visakhapatnam, the lead Project 15B ship, was delivered by MDL on 28 October 2021; ships of that class are 163 metres long. The ageing Soviet-origin Rajput class is now being retired.

What an AoN means in defence procurement

The DAC, chaired by the Raksha Mantri, is the Defence Ministry’s top body for capital purchases. The PIB release describes an AoN as “in-principle administrative” approval: it accepts that the Services need a capability and opens the buying process. Tendering, evaluation and contract finalisation follow, and reports note that a programme of this size also needs Cabinet Committee on Security clearance. So an AoN does not mean ships are on order yet.

Exam angle: how NDA, CDS and CAPF can ask this

  • Match-the-following questions on warship projects (P-15A, P-15B, P-17A, P-18A) and their classes are common in defence GK sections.
  • Know the role of the Defence Acquisition Council, who chairs it, and what “Acceptance of Necessity” means.
  • Questions on shipbuilding PSUs (MDL in Mumbai, GRSE in Kolkata) and the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” push in defence production can draw on this news.
  • CDS and CAPF papers may ask about the difference between a destroyer, frigate and corvette in terms of size and role.
