Since Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, 31 May 2026 that post has been held by Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, the 27th CNS, who succeeded Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi. The first Indian to head the Navy was Vice Admiral R.D. Katari, who took charge on 22 April 1958.
Why the list of Navy Chiefs is in the news
The Navy changed hands on 31 May 2026, when Admiral Swaminathan relieved Admiral Tripathi, as reported by All India Radio (Akashvani). He said keeping the fleet operationally ready would be his top priority. The tables below run in order of appointment, from the British officers of 1947 to today.
Key facts about the Chief of the Naval Staff
- Rank: a four-star Admiral. Before 1968 the chief was normally a three-star Vice Admiral; the post became four-star in March 1968, when the serving chief A.K. Chatterji was promoted.
- Name of the post: Commander-in-Chief, Royal Indian Navy in 1947. It became CNS and Commander-in-Chief from 21 June 1948, and “Royal” was dropped on 26 January 1950. The Commanders-in-Chief (Change in Designation) Act, 1955 made it simply “Chief of the Naval Staff”.
- Who appoints: the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (Prime Minister and Defence Minister).
- Tenure: three years or age 62, whichever is earlier, under the Regulations for the Navy.
- Numbering: the official count starts from 1955, so Admiral Swaminathan is the 27th CNS.
