US MIDTERM ELECTIONS 2026: Democrats projected to win House and Senate

US Midterm Elections 2026: Results, US Congress vs Indian Parliament and What It Means for India

Quick answer: The US midterm elections were held on 3 November 2026, midway through President Donald Trump’s second term. As of 5 November, US networks projected that the Democratic Party will control both the House of Representatives and the Senate from January 2027, though some races were still being counted.

Why the US midterm elections 2026 are in the news

On Tuesday, 3 November 2026, American voters chose all members of the House of Representatives, about a third of the Senate and 36 state governors. According to CBS News (update of 5 November), Democrats have won at least 54 Senate seats and are projected to hold between 251 and 268 House seats. The final House margin is not settled, as ballots are still being counted in Maine, Montana, Florida, Alaska and elsewhere, and CBS News still rates the Alaska and Mississippi Senate races as toss-ups.

Before polling day, Republicans held the Senate 53-47, as reported by Northeastern Global News, which listed seven Senate seats won by Democrats from Republicans: Kansas, Iowa, Texas, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina. The President’s party will therefore face an opposition-controlled Congress for the last two years of his term.

Key facts about the 2026 midterm results

  • Seats at stake: all 435 House seats, 35 of 100 Senate seats and 36 governorships (The Pioneer).
  • Senate: Democrats projected at at least 54 seats; Alaska and Mississippi undecided.
  • House: Democrats projected at 251 to 268 seats; a majority needs 218.
  • Leadership: Hakeem Jeffries is in line to become Speaker of the House; CBS News reported that current Speaker Mike Johnson will not run for minority leader.
  • Firsts reported: Northeastern Global News reported projected wins for Abdul El-Sayed (Michigan), the first Muslim elected to the US Senate, and Keisha Lance Bottoms (Georgia), the first Black woman governor in the US.

US Congress and the Indian Parliament compared

FeatureUS CongressParliament of India
Lower HouseHouse: 435 voting members (fixed by a 1911 law); 2-year termLok Sabha: 5 years unless dissolved earlier (Article 83(2))
Upper HouseSenate: 2 per state (100); six-year terms; directly elected since the 17th Amendment (1913)Rajya Sabha: up to 238 elected plus 12 nominated (Article 80), chosen by state MLAs through single transferable vote
RenewalAbout one-third of Senate seats every two yearsNot dissolved; about one-third retire every second year (Article 83(1))
Money mattersRevenue bills must start in the HouseMoney Bill cannot be introduced in Rajya Sabha, which only recommends within 14 days (Article 109)
ExecutivePresident elected separately for a fixed termCouncil of Ministers collectively responsible to the Lok Sabha (Article 75(3))

Because the US President stays in office for the full term even if the opposition wins Congress, a midterm loss produces a “divided government”, not a change of government. New congressional terms begin at noon on 3 January under the 20th Amendment.

What the result could mean for India

A pre-poll analysis in The Pioneer (2 November) set out where India-US issues stood:

  • Trade deal: the interim agreement was still unsigned; a February 2026 framework had cut the US tariff on Indian goods to 18 per cent from 50 per cent.
  • Tariff powers: these lie mainly with the President under Section 232 (national security) and Section 301 (unfair trade). Congress can hold hearings and pass bills, but the President has a veto.
  • Russian oil law: a September law allows tariffs of up to 100 per cent on the biggest buyers of Russian oil and gas; it was waived on 16 October.
  • H-1B visas: a USD 100,000 fee on certain new petitions is blocked by federal courts.

Analysts quoted by Northeastern Global News expect a Democratic Congress to question the executive more on issues such as NATO and Russia sanctions. How much this changes policy towards India will depend on whether oversight becomes law.

Exam angle: how NDA, CDS and CAPF can ask this

  • Presidential versus parliamentary systems, and the size and terms of the House and Senate, are standard NDA and CDS polity themes.
  • Learn the Indian counterparts: Articles 75, 80, 83 and 109.
