OPERATION TRIDENT: NCB hits drug cartel in 3 NE states

Operation Trident 2026: NCB’s Anti-Drug Crackdown in Assam, Mizoram, Manipur (and the 1971 Navy Trap)

Quick answer: Operation Trident (2026) is a multi-agency crackdown led by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on a transnational drug cartel operating across Assam, Mizoram and Manipur. It was carried out with Mizoram Police and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the early hours of 23 October 2026, and the Ministry of Home Affairs announced it on 25 October. Do not confuse it with the Indian Navy’s Operation Trident of 1971, the missile-boat attack on Karachi that Navy Day (4 December) commemorates.

Why Operation Trident is in the news

According to a Ministry of Home Affairs release issued through PIB on 25 October 2026, 38 multi-agency teams struck 38 pre-identified locations at the same time. The searches covered:

  • Aizawl and Champhai in Mizoram
  • Zokhawthar, a trading town on the India–Myanmar border in Mizoram
  • Churachandpur in Manipur
  • the Cachar transit corridor in Assam

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the network moved narcotics across the borders of India, Myanmar and Bangladesh through what officials called the “Death Triangle Corridor”. He linked the operation to the government’s goal of eliminating drug networks by 31 December 2029.

Key facts about Operation Trident (2026)

  • Lead agency: Narcotics Control Bureau, working with Mizoram Police and the Enforcement Directorate.
  • Date: early hours of 23 October 2026. It was publicised by the MHA on 25 October.
  • Scale: 38 teams, 38 locations, three states (Assam, Mizoram, Manipur).
  • Results announced:
    • about Rs 100 crore in hawala transactions uncovered
    • 1,424 bank accounts frozen
    • properties worth Rs 17.82 crore attached
    • 500 detonators and Rs 12 lakh in cash seized
    • 18 people arrested
  • Drugs involved: methamphetamine and heroin, routed from Myanmar through Mizoram, Manipur, Assam and Tripura into mainland India and Bangladesh.
  • Policy frame: the Vision Document on Narcotics Control (2026–2029), which shifts enforcement from a “seizure-centric” to a “network-centric” approach aimed at the money trail.

Exam trap: two operations named Trident

This is the most likely point of confusion in an exam. The name is the same, but the two operations have nothing else in common.

NCB and the drug-trafficking context

  • NCB was created on 17 March 1986 to enforce the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. It is the national coordinating agency for drug law enforcement and works under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • India lies between the two biggest opium-producing regions in the world. The Golden Crescent covers Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan. The Golden Triangle is where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet, at the confluence of the Ruak and Mekong rivers. The north-east, which borders Myanmar, is exposed to the Golden Triangle route.

Exam angle: how NDA, CDS and CAPF can ask this

  • A “match the operation with the agency” question can use the two Tridents to trap you. Link 1971 with the Navy and Karachi, and 2026 with the NCB and the north-east.
  • Navy Day (4 December), Army Day (15 January) and Air Force Day (8 October) are standard static GK.
  • CAPF papers often ask about internal security bodies such as the NCB, ED and NIA, which ministry each falls under, and the NDPS Act.
  • States bordering Myanmar (Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram) are a frequent geography question.
