AFCAT EKT 2026: Engineering Knowledge Test — Syllabus, Pattern & Preparation Strategy

Complete guide to the AFCAT Engineering Knowledge Test (EKT) 2026 — exam pattern, stream-wise syllabus (Mechanical, Electronics, CS, Civil), cut off marks, preparation strategy, and how EKT affects your GD Technical merit rank.

📋 EKT Exam Pattern ⚙️ Stream-wise Syllabus 🎯 Cut Off Trends 📈 Preparation Strategy ✅ How Merit Is Calculated
📊 About this guide: NCA Academy coaches GD Technical candidates with dedicated EKT modules developed by ex-IAF Technical Branch officers. This guide covers EKT syllabus, pattern, and preparation strategy based on analysis of EKT question papers from 2018–2025 AFCAT cycles. Cross-referenced with official AFCAT notifications at afcat.cdac.in.

What is the AFCAT EKT?

The Engineering Knowledge Test (EKT) is an additional paper taken by all GD Technical (GDT) candidates in AFCAT. While every AFCAT candidate writes the same 100-question, 120-minute AFCAT paper, GD Technical aspirants must additionally complete the EKT — a 45-minute paper testing engineering fundamentals in their specialisation stream.

EKT is not optional for GD Technical candidates — it is mandatory and your EKT score directly contributes to your GDT merit rank. A candidate who ignores EKT preparation risks losing their GDT selection even with a strong AFCAT score. See how this compares to GD Non-Technical eligibility in our GD Technical vs Non-Technical guide.

⚠️ EKT Stream Selection Is Locked at Application Stage

When you fill the AFCAT application, you select your EKT stream based on your engineering discipline. This cannot be changed after submission. Make sure you select the stream that matches your B.E./B.Tech branch — choosing an incorrect stream and attempting it for an “easier” paper has led to disqualification in past cycles.

EKT Cut Off Trends (2019–2025)

EKT has its own qualifying threshold. Candidates must clear both the AFCAT cut off AND the EKT cut off to be considered for GD Technical merit ranking.

💡 EKT Scoring Strategy from NCA Academy

At 3 marks per correct and -1 for wrong answers, the expected value calculation changes: attempt if you can confidently eliminate at least 2 options. With 50 questions in 45 minutes, you have 54 seconds per question — faster than AFCAT. Practice under timed conditions. A score of 90–105 in EKT, combined with a strong AFCAT score (160+), typically positions GDT candidates well in the merit list.

How EKT Affects GD Technical Merit

The GD Technical merit list is calculated by combining AFCAT and EKT scores. The IAF does not publish the exact weightage formula, but based on NCA Academy’s tracking of student outcomes across multiple cycles:

ScenarioAFCAT ScoreEKT ScoreGDT Outcome
Strong AFCAT + Strong EKT165+105+High merit — strong AFSB call probability
Strong AFCAT + Weak EKT165+60–75Merit reduced — may miss AFSB call despite high AFCAT
Borderline AFCAT + Strong EKT148–158110+EKT can compensate — merit improved
Weak AFCAT + Strong EKTBelow 148AnyBelow AFCAT cut off — disqualified regardless of EKT

EKT Preparation Strategy

EKT preparation should run parallel to AFCAT preparation, not replace it. Based on NCA Academy’s GDT coaching data, the optimal split is:

PhaseAFCAT TimeEKT TimeFocus
Month 1 (Foundation)3.0 hr/day30 min/dayEKT: review core subjects, identify weak topics
Month 2 (Depth)2.5 hr/day45 min/dayEKT: topic-wise practice sets, timed questions
Month 3 (Sprint)2.5 hr/day45 min/dayEKT: full 50-question timed mocks, error analysis

Frequently Asked Questions — AFCAT EKT 2026

Is EKT compulsory for all AFCAT candidates?
No — EKT is compulsory only for GD Technical (GDT) branch candidates. Flying Branch and GD Non-Technical candidates do not take the EKT. If you apply for GDT, EKT is mandatory and you must take it on the same day as AFCAT.
What is the EKT cut off for 2026?
The IAF does not publish an official EKT-specific cut off separately from the combined AFCAT+EKT result. Based on historical trends, a score of 55–60 out of 150 is the minimum qualifying range, with 90+ needed to be competitively placed in the GDT merit list.
Can I prepare for EKT in 1 month?
Yes, if your engineering fundamentals are strong. 30–45 minutes of focused EKT preparation daily for 4–6 weeks, with timed practice sets in the final 2 weeks, is typically sufficient. Candidates who struggle with core subjects may need 2 months. Never leave EKT preparation for the last week.
How difficult is the EKT compared to GATE?
Significantly easier than GATE. EKT tests B.E./B.Tech undergraduate fundamentals at a conceptual level — it does not require the depth of mathematical derivation that GATE demands. Most engineers who have a solid understanding of their core subjects find EKT manageable with 4–6 weeks of focused revision.
What if I fail the EKT but clear the AFCAT cut off?
You will not be eligible for GD Technical. However, if you also applied for GD Non-Technical in the same cycle, your AFCAT score is valid for GDNT consideration. This is why NCA Academy recommends engineering graduates apply for both GDT and GDNT — the AFCAT score covers both, and EKT only impacts GDT eligibility.
