Section-wise AFCAT 2026 Pattern Breakdown
Each section in AFCAT tests a distinct cognitive skill. Here’s what you’ll face in each section:
| Topic | Expected Questions | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Reading Comprehension | 4–5 | Medium |
| Error Detection / Spotting | 3–4 | Easy-Med |
| Sentence Completion / Fill in Blanks | 3–4 | Easy |
| Synonyms & Antonyms | 4–5 | Easy-Med |
| Idioms & Phrases | 2–3 | Medium |
| Para Jumbles / Ordering | 2–3 | Medium |
💡 NCA Tip for Verbal
This section is the most scoring if you have a reading habit. Focus on RC passages and vocabulary (Synonyms/Antonyms). A strong vocabulary alone can guarantee 18–20 correct in this section. Read The Hindu editorial daily for 20 minutes.
| Topic | Expected Questions | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Decimal Fractions & Percentage | 2–3 | Easy |
| Simple & Compound Interest | 1–2 | Easy |
| Time, Speed & Distance | 2–3 | Medium |
| Profit, Loss & Discount | 2 | Easy |
| Ratio & Proportion / Averages | 2–3 | Easy-Med |
| Algebra / Quadratic Equations | 2–3 | Medium |
| Mensuration | 2 | Medium |
💡 NCA Tip for Numerical
AFCAT Numerical is Class 10–11 level. Don’t skip this section — it’s quick marks. Practice speed calculation techniques. In NCA coaching, we dedicate 3 weeks specifically to Numerical shortcuts that let students solve these in under 45 seconds each.
| Topic | Expected Questions | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Verbal Reasoning (Series, Analogies) | 6–8 | Easy-Med |
| Non-verbal Reasoning (Patterns, Figures) | 6–8 | Medium |
| Spatial Ability (3D Figures, Folding) | 8–10 | Hard |
| Coding-Decoding | 3–4 | Easy |
| Blood Relations / Direction Sense | 2–3 | Easy-Med |
| Syllogisms / Statement Assumptions | 2–3 | Medium |
💡 NCA Tip for Reasoning
Spatial Ability is where most students lose marks. This is the AFCAT differentiator. NCA specifically trains spatial intelligence through 200+ practice sets across rotations, mirror images, and 3D folding. Give 40% of your Reasoning preparation time to Spatial Ability alone.
| Topic | Expected Questions | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| History (Ancient, Medieval, Modern) | 3–4 | Medium |
| Geography (India + World) | 3–4 | Easy-Med |
| Indian Polity & Constitution | 2–3 | Medium |
| Science & Technology / Defence Technology | 4–5 | Medium |
| Current Affairs (Last 12 months) | 4–5 | Dynamic |
| Sports / Awards / IAF History | 2–3 | Easy |
💡 NCA Tip for GK
Start with IAF-specific GK first — aircraft names, IAF milestones, Operation histories. These are guaranteed questions. Then cover Defence technology news from the past 6 months. Current Affairs should be your weekly habit, not last-minute cramming.
AFCAT 2026 Attempt Strategy — How to Score 165+
Knowing the AFCAT exam pattern is half the battle. The other half is smart attempt order. Here’s the sequence NCA recommends:
| Step | Section to Attempt | Why | Time Budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Verbal Ability | Easiest marks, warms you up | 18–20 min |
| 2nd | GK (Known Answers) | Quick reads — attempt only known | 10–12 min |
| 3rd | Numerical Ability | Limited questions, formula-based | 22–25 min |
| 4th | Reasoning (Easy first) | Do Verbal Reasoning before Spatial | 35–40 min |
| Review | Flagged questions | Return only if time allows | 10 min |
⚠️ Negative Marking Warning
Never guess blindly. With 1/3 negative marking, 3 wrong answers wipe out 1 correct attempt. Only guess if you can eliminate at least 2 options. A score of 60 correct + 0 wrong = 180 marks is better than 80 correct + 30 wrong = 210 – 30 = 180 marks. Accuracy beats volume.
AFCAT EKT (Engineering Knowledge Test) Pattern 2026
Candidates applying for the Flying Branch (Technical) or Ground Duty Technical must additionally appear for EKT:
| Branch | EKT Duration | Questions | Marks | Subject |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanical | 45 minutes | 50 | 150 | Engineering Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Strength of Materials |
| Electronics & Electrical | 45 minutes | 50 | 150 | Circuit Theory, Electronics, Control Systems |
| Computer Science | 45 minutes | 50 | 150 | Programming, Data Structures, Operating Systems, Networks |
EKT is held immediately after AFCAT in the same sitting. There is no negative marking in EKT. Score in EKT is used only to break ties — AFCAT marks determine the primary shortlist.
AFCAT 2026 Cutoff Expectations
| Branch | Expected Cutoff 2026 | Safe Score | Competition Level |
