How OLQs Are Assessed at the SSB

The three assessors — the Interviewing Officer (IO), the Psychologist and the GTO — independently observe your OLQs across the psychology tests, group tasks and the personal interview, then reconcile their assessment on Conference Day. Consistency across all three techniques is what earns recommendation. Read our key traits for SSB success guide next.

How to Develop Your OLQs Before the SSB

Officer Like Qualities are not innate — they are built through consistent habit. To strengthen Effective Intelligence and Reasoning, solve real daily problems and practise OIR-type puzzles. For Power of Expression, read English newspapers aloud, maintain a vocabulary diary and speak on a topic for two minutes every day. Build Organising Ability and Initiative by leading a small project, a college event or a community activity. Cooperation and Ability to Influence the Group grow through team sports and group study. Determination, Courage and Stamina come from a regular fitness routine — running, push-ups and outdoor activity. The key is authenticity: assessors are trained to spot a rehearsed personality, so develop these traits genuinely over weeks, not days.

Common Myths About OLQs

Myth 1 — “You must show all 15 OLQs.” Assessors look for a consistent, natural display, not a checklist. Myth 2 — “OLQs can be faked at the SSB.” The three-technique design (psychology, GTO, interview) is built to expose inconsistency. Myth 3 — “Only extroverts get recommended.” Quiet candidates with strong reasoning, responsibility and determination are regularly recommended. Focus on being the best, honest version of yourself.
