🎖️ SSB Interview Complete Guide 2025–26 — All 5 Days Explained
Everything you need to know about cracking the SSB Interview — from Day 1 Screening to Day 5 Conference. Expert guidance from NCA Academy’s ex-defence faculty.
What Is the SSB Interview?
The Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview is a 5-day personality and leadership assessment conducted by the Indian Armed Forces to select officer candidates. It is unlike any other exam — there are no right or wrong answers; the board assesses whether you have the Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) required to lead soldiers in the Indian Army, Navy, or Air Force.
Three independent assessors — a Psychologist, a Group Testing Officer (GTO), and an Interviewing Officer (IO) — assess you simultaneously through different tests. Their observations are then compiled at the Day 5 Conference to determine Recommend or Not Recommend.

The 15 Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) — What the SSB Assesses
Courage
Physical and moral courage to take initiative and stand by decisions under pressure.
Intelligence
Effective intelligence — the ability to reason, assess situations, and make sound decisions quickly.
Social Adaptability
Ease of mixing with people from all backgrounds; team integration without ego.
Ability to Influence Group
Persuasiveness through ideas and communication — not force or dominance.
Sense of Responsibility
Ownership of tasks and outcomes — for self and for team members.
Stamina
Physical and mental endurance — the ability to perform under fatigue and sustained pressure.
Above are 6 of the 15 OLQs. The full list also includes Initiative, Speed of Decision, Self-Confidence, Organising Ability, Power of Expression, Liveliness, Cooperation, Determination, and Sense of Humour.
Day-by-Day SSB Breakdown
Day 1 — Screening: OIR + PPDT
Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR): Two sets of 50 verbal and non-verbal intelligence questions. Aim for OIR Grade 1 or 2. PPDT: You see a hazy image for 30 seconds, write a story in 4 minutes, narrate it, then participate in a group discussion to form a common story. ~50% of candidates are screened out here.
NCA Tip: In PPDT, always narrate within 1 minute, ensure your story character has clear OLQs, and be the first to initiate contribution in the group discussion without dominating.
Day 2 — Psychology Tests
TAT (Thematic Apperception Test): 11 pictures + 1 blank. Write a story for each in 4 minutes. Make your hero proactive, positive, and officer-like. Avoid repetition of themes.
WAT (Word Association Test): 60 words shown for 15 seconds each. Write the first positive, action-oriented sentence that comes to mind. Never write negative or passive responses.
SRT (Situation Reaction Test): 60 situations in 30 minutes. Respond with what you would actually do — practical, positive, decisive. Responses reveal personality under pressure.
SD (Self Description): What do your parents, teachers, friends, and you think about yourself? Be honest and OLQ-aligned. Inconsistency here causes trouble in the PI.

Day 3 & 4 — GTO Tasks
Group Discussion: 2 topics, 15 candidates. Initiate, contribute quality ideas, listen actively, help conclude. Never dominate; never go silent.
Group Planning Exercise: Analyse a map problem, suggest solutions, defend your plan in group — reach consensus. Leadership and logical thinking both assessed.
PGT / HGT / FGT: Outdoor obstacle tasks with rules (out-of-bound areas, helping items). Task completion, initiative, and teamwork are all assessed simultaneously.
Individual Obstacles: 10 obstacles, 3 minutes. Score as many as possible — balance, agility, and courage tested here.
Command Task: You are the commander. Choose 2 helpers. Complete a GTO task. This is your chance to demonstrate decision-making and leadership under observation.
