The GTO tasks in the SSB interview are among the most challenging — and most misunderstood — parts of the entire selection process. Candidates who understand every GTO task in advance, know what assessors are looking for, and have practised under realistic conditions score significantly higher. Here is the complete guide to all 9 GTO tasks in the SSB interview.
The GTO (Group Testing Officer) tasks are one of the most feared — and most misunderstood — parts of the SSB interview. Candidates who understand each task in advance perform significantly better. Here is a complete breakdown of all 9 GTO tasks, what assessors are looking for, and how to score in each.
What is the GTO in SSB?
The Group Testing Officer (GTO) is a senior Army officer who conducts a series of group-based outdoor and indoor tasks over two days (Day 2 and Day 3) of the SSB interview. The GTO is assessing your Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) — especially how you function in a group, how you lead, and how you respond under pressure.
All 9 GTO Tasks Explained
1. Group Discussion (GD)
Two GD rounds are held — one on a current affairs topic and one on a general/abstract topic. There is no designated leader. Candidates are expected to initiate, contribute meaningful points, listen to others, and help the group reach a conclusion. Key tip: Speak clearly, don’t shout over others, and bring the group together — don’t argue to “win.”
2. Group Planning Exercise (GPE) / Military Planning Exercise (MPE)
Candidates are given a model (miniature terrain) and a situation involving multiple problems. They must read the scenario individually, discuss as a group, and arrive at a common plan. Key tip: Prioritise problems logically. Be assertive but flexible. Time management is critical.
3. Progressive Group Task (PGT)
The group must cross obstacles using limited resources (a plank, rope, balli, etc.) without touching the “out of bounds” areas. Obstacles increase in difficulty progressively. Key tip: Take initiative early, help teammates, keep the group moving. Leadership here is measured, not just activity.
4. Half Group Task (HGT)
The group is split in two. The same obstacle crossing rules apply but now every individual’s contribution is more visible. Key tip: This is your chance to shine if you were less visible in PGT. Lead a solution, contribute a physical idea.
5. Individual Obstacles
10 individual obstacles of increasing difficulty, each with point values (1–10). Candidates attempt as many as possible in 3 minutes. Key tip: Don’t waste time on one obstacle. Attempt easy ones quickly, skip if stuck, and return. Every point counts.
6. Command Task
One candidate is made the “Commander” and must choose 2–3 subordinates from the group to help solve an obstacle problem. The Commander gives all instructions. Key tip: Think before acting. Give clear, achievable instructions. Treat subordinates with respect — don’t bark orders.
7. Final Group Task (FGT)
Similar to PGT and HGT but with the full group reunited. It is often the last GTO activity. Key tip: Leave a strong final impression. Be a unifying force in the group.
8. Lecturette
Each candidate picks a topic from 4 chits and delivers a 3-minute talk to the rest of the group without any preparation time. Topics are usually current affairs, defence, social issues, or science. Key tip: Read defence news and current affairs daily. Structure your talk: intro → 2–3 points → conclusion. Maintain eye contact.
9. Snake Race / Group Obstacle Race
The group is divided into two teams and must complete an obstacle course while carrying a “snake” (a heavy rope or log) together. Speed and cooperation are both assessed. Key tip: Coordinate with your team, encourage slower members, and keep energy high throughout.
What the GTO Is Really Looking For
Across all 9 tasks, the GTO is assessing 15 OLQs grouped into 4 categories: Effective Intelligence, Social Adaptability, Dynamic Qualities, and Social Maturity. The most commonly assessed in GTO tasks are: initiative, determination, cooperation, courage, and likeability (group influence).
