The SSB interview 5-day schedule is a structured, carefully sequenced assessment process designed to evaluate your Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) from multiple angles over five consecutive days. Knowing exactly what happens each day — and how to prepare for it — gives you a significant advantage going in.
Day 0 – Reporting and PIQ Filling
Most SSB centres require candidates to report the evening before Day 1. You’ll be allotted a chest number, briefed on the schedule, and asked to fill out the Personal Information Questionnaire (PIQ). The PIQ is the foundation of your Personal Interview — fill it carefully, honestly, and specifically. Avoid vague entries. Everything you write becomes material for your IO.
Day 1 – Screening (OIR Test + PPDT)
Day 1 is the most critical day for many candidates — 40–60% are screened out and sent home. It consists of two parts:
Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test
Two verbal and non-verbal reasoning papers of 40 questions each, completed in approximately 17 minutes per paper. This tests your reasoning ability, pattern recognition, and analytical thinking. The OIR is not about knowledge — it’s about speed and accuracy. Practice OIR tests extensively beforehand.
Picture Perception and Description Test (PPDT)
A blurred image is shown for 30 seconds. You must write a story about it in 4 minutes — with a hero, a clear storyline, and a positive outcome. Then you discuss your story in a group of 8–12 candidates and arrive at a common story together. The assessors are watching for initiative, communication clarity, and how you interact in a group — even at this early stage.
Screened-in candidates proceed. Screened-out candidates are thanked and sent home.
Day 2 – Psychology Tests
For screened-in candidates, Day 2 is entirely psychology tests conducted by a trained Psychologist. These four tests run in sequence:
- TAT (Thematic Apperception Test): 12 images + 1 blank slide. Write a story for each in 4 minutes. Your stories reveal your thought patterns, values, and personality traits.
- WAT (Word Association Test): 60 words flashed one at a time (15 seconds each). Write the first word or phrase that comes to mind. Reveals underlying mindset.
- SRT (Situation Reaction Test): 60 real-life situations — how would you react? 30 seconds per situation. Tests practical judgment and initiative.
- SDT (Self Description Test): 5 descriptions — how your parents, teachers, friends, yourself, and your ideal self see you. 1 minute each. Tests self-awareness and consistency.
The Personal Interview also often starts on Day 2 in the afternoon or evening. See our complete SSB psychological tests guide for full preparation advice.
Day 3 – GTO Tasks Part 1
The Group Testing Officer takes over for two days of outdoor and indoor group tasks. Day 3 typically includes:
- Group Discussion (GD): Two rounds — one current affairs topic, one general topic. No designated leader. Assessors watch for initiative, logical contribution, and listening skills.
- Group Planning Exercise (GPE/MPE): A model terrain with a complex scenario. The group must discuss, plan, and present a common solution.
- Progressive Group Task (PGT): Outdoor obstacle crossing with limited resources (plank, rope, balli). Increases in difficulty.
- Half Group Task (HGT): Same format as PGT but with half the group — making each individual more visible.
Day 4 – GTO Tasks Part 2 + Personal Interview
Day 4 continues with the remaining GTO tasks and Personal Interviews for candidates who haven’t had theirs yet:
- Individual Obstacles: 10 obstacles of increasing difficulty, each worth 1–10 points. Attempt as many as possible in the time limit. Physical fitness matters here.
- Command Task: You are made the commander and must select 2–3 subordinates to solve an obstacle. Your leadership, planning, and briefing are assessed.
- Final Group Task (FGT): The full group returns for one final obstacle task — assessors confirm impressions from PGT/HGT.
- Lecturette: A 3-minute impromptu talk on a topic of your choice from a given list. Tests communication, confidence, and knowledge. See our SSB lecturette topics guide.
- Personal Interview (PI): A 45–60 minute in-depth interview with the Interviewing Officer. Covers your PIQ, personal background, current affairs, and motivation for joining.
Day 5 – Conference and Results
The final day is the Conference. All three assessors — Psychologist, GTO, and IO — meet with the Commandant to discuss each candidate. You are briefly called in for a final round. The board members may ask a question or two, or simply observe your bearing. After all conferences, chest numbers of recommended candidates are announced. Selected candidates undergo a formal medical examination before final documentation.
Key Tips for Each Day
- Day 0: Fill PIQ carefully and sleep well — first impressions matter from the moment you arrive.
- Day 1: Practice OIR tests and PPDT stories under time pressure. Don’t get screened out on lack of practice.
- Day 2: Write naturally in psychology tests. Consistency across all four tests is more important than any single “perfect” answer.
- Day 3–4: Stay energetic. Participate in every GTO task. Physical fitness prevents fatigue that kills performance.
- Day 5: Maintain your bearing and positivity regardless of how you think the week went. The Conference impression counts.
