How Indian Nurses Can Register with UK NMC — Step-by-Step Process 2025
The UK remains one of the top destinations for Indian nurses, offering excellent salaries, career growth and a pathway to permanent residency. However, the UK NMC registration process is multi-stage and can take 12–18 months if you don’t know what to expect. This guide breaks down every step clearly.
UK NMC Registration Requirements for Indian Nurses
To register as a nurse with the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), Indian nurses must meet all of the following:
- Hold a recognised nursing qualification (BSc Nursing or equivalent)
- Pass an English language test: OET (Grade B in all sub-tests) or IELTS Academic (7.0 in all)
- Pass the NMC Computer-Based Test (CBT)
- Pass the NMC Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)
Step-by-Step NMC Registration Process
Step 1: Apply to NMC and Create Your Online Account
Submit your application on the NMC website. You’ll need certified translations of your nursing degree, transcripts and nursing council registration certificate.
Step 2: Credential Verification (NMC Verification)
The NMC verifies your qualifications directly with your Indian nursing council and university. This can take 3–6 months. Ensure your documents are in order before applying.
Step 3: English Language Test (OET or IELTS)
Pass OET with Grade B in all four sub-tests, or IELTS Academic with 7.0 in each component. Most Indian nurses prefer OET as it uses nursing-specific content. Start OET preparation early as this often takes 3–5 months.
Step 4: NMC Computer-Based Test (CBT)
The CBT is a 120-question multiple-choice exam testing nursing knowledge across all NMC domains. It is taken at Pearson VUE test centres — including centres in India. Preparation time is typically 2–3 months.
NCA Academy offers UK NMC CBT coaching for Indian nurses.
Step 5: Decision in Principle (DIP)
Once CBT is passed, the NMC issues a Decision in Principle — confirming you are eligible to proceed to OSCE. You can now seek employment in the UK on the Health and Care Worker visa.
Step 6: Travel to UK and OSCE Preparation
The NMC OSCE must be taken at an NMC-approved test centre in the UK. You’ll typically arrive in the UK on a sponsored work visa, begin a supervised clinical placement, and then sit your OSCE.
Start your UK NMC OSCE preparation before you travel — you want to be ready immediately upon arrival.
Step 7: Pass the OSCE and Complete Registration
Once you pass the OSCE, the NMC confirms your registration as a Registered Nurse in the UK. You receive your PIN and can practise independently.
