OET Nursing Exam — Complete Guide for Indian Nurses 2025
The OET (Occupational English Test) is a mandatory requirement for Indian nurses seeking registration in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. Unlike IELTS, OET is designed specifically for healthcare professionals — making it both more relevant and, in some ways, more challenging.
What Is OET Nursing?
OET is an English language proficiency test for healthcare professionals. The nursing-specific version tests four skills — Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking — using healthcare scenarios, patient communications and clinical contexts.
It is accepted by the UK NMC, AHPRA (Australia), Nursing Council of New Zealand, NMBI (Ireland) and many other nursing regulatory bodies worldwide.
OET Exam Format for Nurses
- Listening: ~45 minutes — consultations and healthcare interviews
- Reading: ~60 minutes — healthcare-related texts, multiple choice and matching
- Writing: 45 minutes — write a referral letter from patient case notes
- Speaking: ~20 minutes — two role-plays with trained interlocutor as patient
OET Scoring and Pass Mark
OET grades from A (highest) to E (fail). Most nursing regulatory bodies require a minimum grade of B in all four sub-tests. Grade B is approximately equivalent to IELTS 7.0.
| Grade | Score Range | IELTS Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| A | 450–500 | 8.5–9.0 |
| B | 350–449 | 7.0–8.0 |
| C+ | 300–349 | 6.5 |
| C | 250–299 | 5.5–6.0 |
The OET Writing Sub-test — Why Indian Nurses Struggle
The Writing sub-test is where most Indian nurses underperform. The task requires you to write a referral or discharge letter from a set of case notes in 45 minutes. Common problems include:
- Including irrelevant information from the case notes
- Using inappropriate register (too informal or too clinical)
- Poor letter structure and layout
- Grammatical errors affecting clarity
Targeted writing practice with feedback is essential. Generic English courses do not prepare you adequately for this sub-test.
How to Prepare for OET Nursing
- Complete the official OET preparation portal materials first
- Practise Writing with feedback from a trained OET coach — do not self-assess
- Build healthcare vocabulary: conditions, procedures, medications, anatomy
- For Speaking, practise role-plays with a partner daily
- For Listening, listen to medical podcasts, doctor-patient consultation recordings
NCA Academy’s OET nursing coaching in India covers all four sub-tests with specialist coaches and extensive Writing feedback sessions.
How long does it take to prepare for OET Nursing?
Most Indian nursing graduates need 3–5 months of preparation. Candidates with strong English and regular practice can achieve Grade B in 2–3 months with focused coaching on the Writing sub-test.
Is OET easier than IELTS for nurses?
OET and IELTS test different things. OET uses healthcare contexts, which is more familiar to nurses — but the Writing sub-test is uniquely challenging. Most nursing regulators now prefer OET as it is more relevant to clinical practice.
