Vacancy Breakdown: Mechanical vs Electronics
The 60 vacancies for the January 2027 course are split equally between two engineering streams. The Naval Headquarters may re-allot up to 7 cadets from the Mechanical stream to a specialised Naval Architecture programme, making it a three-pathway entry.
| Stream | Total Seats | Women Seats | Special Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanical Engineering | 30 | Max 4 | Up to 7 cadets may be re-allotted to Naval Architecture & Shipbuilding at NCW, Kochi (merit-based) |
| Electronics & Communication Engineering | 30 | Max 4 | Covers avionics, radar, communication systems, weapon systems electronics |
| Total | 60 | Max 8 | All seats: Permanent Commission, Technical Branch |
⚓ What Is Naval Architecture & Shipbuilding?
Seven cadets from the Mechanical Engineering stream may be re-allotted to Naval Architecture & Shipbuilding at the Naval Construction Wing (NCW), Kochi. This is the most specialised stream — these officers design, construct, and maintain Indian Navy warships including frigates, destroyers, and submarines. Re-allotment is based on academic merit at INA and service requirements — it cannot be applied for directly.
Eligibility Criteria — Who Can Apply for Navy 10+2 B.Tech Entry January 2027?
Age Limit (as on 01 January 2027)
| Parameter | Requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Date of Birth — Earliest | 02 July 2007 | Candidates born before this date are over-age |
| Date of Birth — Latest | 01 January 2010 | Candidates born after this date are under-age |
| Age Verification | Class 10 school certificate | DOB as per board certificate is final |
| Age Relaxation | None | No SC/ST/OBC relaxation for officer cadre entries |
Educational Qualification
| Criterion | Minimum Requirement | Important Note |
|---|---|---|
| PCM Aggregate at 10+2 | 70% in Physics + Chemistry + Mathematics combined | All three subjects count; individual subject marks not specified separately |
| English | 50% in English — Class 10 or Class 12 | Either board result is acceptable |
| JEE Main 2026 | Must have appeared — shortlisting purely on CRL rank | Mandatory — no alternative; higher CRL = better SSB call probability |
| Final Year Applicants | Appearing candidates may apply | Must meet 70% PCM condition at actual result; subject to verification |
| Marital Status | Unmarried at time of joining | Applies to both male and female candidates |
| Nationality | Indian citizen (GoI nationality conditions) | As per existing provisions |
⚠️ JEE Main 2026 Is the Sole Shortlisting Criterion — No Exceptions
Unlike other Navy entries where shortlisting uses internal exams or board marks, the 10+2 B.Tech scheme uses JEE Main 2026 All India CRL rank exclusively. Naval HQ fixes a cut-off CRL rank and only candidates above it receive SSB call letters. A candidate with 85% PCM but no JEE Main 2026 attempt cannot apply. If you appeared for JEE Main 2026 and scored reasonably (top 2–3 lakh CRL is typically sufficient for a call), apply before 18 June 2026.
Selection Process — 4 Stages from Application to Commission
Stage 1: JEE Main 2026 CRL Shortlisting
Naval HQ analyses the JEE (Main) 2026 All India Common Rank List and fixes a cut-off rank. All eligible applicants above the cut-off rank receive SSB call letters via email and SMS. The Navy does not disclose the exact cut-off rank in advance — it varies each cycle based on vacancies and applications.
Stage 2: SSB Interview (5 Days)
Conducted at Services Selection Boards in Bengaluru, Bhopal, Kolkata, or Visakhapatnam from September 2026. The SSB assesses 15 Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) over 5 days through psychological tests, group tasks, and a personal interview. The Indian Navy pays AC 3-tier return train fare for the first SSB call for this entry. See the detailed SSB section below.
Stage 3: Medical Examination
SSB-recommended candidates undergo medical examination at designated Naval Medical establishments. The medical is detailed — vision (distant and near), colour vision, ENT, orthopaedic, cardiovascular, dental, and general fitness are all assessed. Candidates declared medically fit proceed to the merit list.
Stage 4: All-India Merit List + Joining
Final selection is based on combined merit of SSB scores, medical fitness, and police/character verification. Selected candidates receive detailed joining instructions for the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kerala. The January 2027 course begins in January 2027.
SSB Interview for Indian Navy 10+2 B.Tech Entry — What to Expect
The SSB (Services Selection Board) is where the vast majority of candidates with strong JEE ranks and good PCM scores get eliminated. The SSB does not test academic knowledge — it assesses 15 specific Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) including effective intelligence, social adaptability, courage, stamina, cooperation, and officer potential.
Days 2–4 — Assessment: Psychology tests (TAT, WAT, SRT, Self Description), GTO tasks (Group Discussion, PGT, HGT, Command Task, Individual Obstacles, FGT, Lecturette), Personal Interview with board assessor.
Day 5 — Conference: Full board reviews all assessments. Final decision: Recommended (proceed to medical) or Not Recommended (no appeal). National-level pass rate: approximately 8–12% of candidates who appear.
| SSB Day | Tests | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 — Screening | OIR (Verbal + Non-Verbal), PPDT (story + group discussion) | First-level filter: intelligence + group behaviour assessment. Screened-out candidates leave on Day 1. |
| Day 2 — Psychology | TAT (12 pictures), WAT (60 words, 15 secs each), SRT (60 situations), SD (Self Description) | Deep personality assessment: decision patterns, stress response, social values, self-awareness. |
| Day 3 — GTO I | Group Discussion, Group Planning Exercise (GPE), Progressive Group Task (PGT), Half Group Task (HGT) | Leadership under group pressure, problem-solving, communication, cooperation. |
| Day 4 — GTO II + PI | Individual Obstacles, Command Task, Final Group Task (FGT), Personal Interview (60–90 minutes) | Individual initiative, leadership when in command, self-presentation, technical awareness. |
| Day 5 — Conference | Board Conference (all 3 assessors: IO, GTO, Psychologist) | Holistic final decision on all 15 OLQs. Recommended or Not Recommended. |
💡 Navy Technical Branch SSB — What’s Different from Army SSB
All three services use the same 5-day SSB structure, but Navy Technical Branch personal interviews have a stronger focus on: (1) spatial intelligence and navigation aptitude; (2) engineering problem-solving scenarios (handling failures, emergency responses); and (3) knowledge of current naval developments (ships, submarine programmes, DRDO projects). NCA Academy’s Navy SSB track addresses all three specifically.
🎖️ Why Choose NCA Academy for Your Indian Navy SSB Preparation?
NCA Academy (New Careers Academy), Chandigarh has built India’s most experience-backed SSB coaching curriculum since 2010 — grounded in 15 years of student outcomes, ex-service officer faculty, and deep analysis of what assessors look for in Navy Technical Branch candidates.
Ex-Service Officer Faculty
Our SSB coaches are ex-Army, Navy & Air Force officers who have served on selection boards — they assess candidates the same way actual SSB boards do.
Psychology Test Mastery
TAT, WAT, SRT, and SD — full module with Navy-specific scenario sets that mirror actual test patterns. Most students improve OLQ expression significantly within 2 weeks.
Outdoor GTO Practice
PGT, HGT, Command Task, Individual Obstacles — practiced on actual outdoor obstacle setups. Physical GTO is where unprepared candidates lose marks fastest.
Personal Interview Coaching
Mock PIs conducted by ex-service officers covering self-introduction, current affairs, naval technology (INS Vikrant, Tejas Navy, P75I submarines), and technical scenarios.
OIR Test Preparation
Over 80% of NCA SSB module students pass Day 1 screening. Our OIR coaching builds the verbal + non-verbal intelligence scores needed to get past the first filter.
Repeat Attempt Analysis
For candidates on their 2nd or 3rd attempt, NCA’s gap-analysis session identifies the specific OLQs that caused the previous Not Recommended — focused fix, not generic re-prep.
