AFCAT Officer Allowances 2026

Flying Allowance (Pilots Only)

The most significant allowance for pilot officers — ranging from ₹25,000 to ₹45,000/month depending on aircraft type and operational experience. Fighter pilots receive higher allowances than transport aircraft pilots. This is on top of basic pay, making pilot in-hand salaries substantially higher than ground duty officers at the same rank.

Dearness Allowance (DA)

Currently ~50% of basic pay (revised quarterly based on inflation index). For a Flying Officer earning ₹56,100 basic, DA adds approximately ₹28,050/month.

House Rent Allowance (HRA)

24–27% of basic pay when government accommodation is not provided. Officers occupying furnished government quarters do not receive HRA but save ₹40,000–₹60,000/month in metro cities effectively.

Transport Allowance

₹3,600 to ₹7,200/month depending on city of posting and designation.

High Altitude & Special Duty Allowances

Officers posted at high altitude stations (Leh, Siachen, Arunachal Pradesh) receive ₹5,000–₹15,000/month extra. Classified or special operational duties may attract additional allowances.

Uniform & Kit Maintenance Allowance

Annual allowance of ₹15,000–₹25,000 for maintaining uniforms and standard kit requirements.

Non-Monetary Benefits for AFCAT Officers

  • Free Government Accommodation: Fully furnished quarters at all postings — saves ₹40,000–₹60,000/month in metros
  • Free Medical Care (ECHS): Covers officer + entire family — hospitalization, surgery, outpatient care — continues post-retirement
  • Leave: 60 days earned leave + 20 days casual leave annually; up to 300 days can be accumulated and encashed on retirement

What is the net take-home salary of an IAF pilot?

A Flying Officer (pilot) receives approximately ₹1,25,000–₹1,35,000 net in-hand per month, including flying allowance. With free accommodation (saving ₹50,000+ in metros) and free medical care, the effective monthly value exceeds ₹1,80,000.

Is AFCAT salary higher than IAS?

Both start at the same basic pay (₹56,100). However, AFCAT officers receive additional allowances (flying, high altitude) and far superior non-monetary benefits — free furnished accommodation, full family medical cover, subsidized education — making the total package comparable to or better than IAS for most postings.

Do AFCAT officers receive salary during training?

Yes. Officers are paid a monthly stipend throughout their training period (6 months for ground duty, up to 3 years for pilots), with full accommodation, food, and medical care provided at no cost during training.

What pension do AFCAT officers receive after retirement?

Officers completing 20+ years of service receive a lifetime pension indexed to their rank’s basic pay. A Group Captain retiring after 26 years receives approximately ₹65,000–₹75,000/month pension, plus gratuity, leave encashment, and ECHS medical cover for life.

What is the cost of living for an IAF officer?

Exceptionally low. With free accommodation, subsidized mess, free medical care, and CSD canteen access, personal expenses rarely exceed ₹15,000–₹20,000/month. This allows officers to save 60–70% of their take-home salary — making it one of the best careers for building long-term wealth.
