Training Duration and Life at Each Academy

IMA Dehradun — 18 Months

The Indian Military Academy in Dehradun is the premier Army officer training institution. Training lasts approximately 18 months (1.5 years) covering military tactics, weapons, physical conditioning, leadership, and academic studies. The IMA has the longest and most rigorous training among the four. On passing out, officers are commissioned as Lieutenants in the Indian Army.

OTA Chennai — 11 Months

OTA’s training is shorter (11 months) because OTA officers receive a Short Service Commission, which is for 10 years (extendable to 14). The training covers military basics, physical conditioning, and leadership — similar in structure to IMA but condensed. OTA is the only academy open to women.

Naval Academy Ezhimala — 5 Years

The Indian Naval Academy (INA) in Ezhimala, Kerala offers the longest training — a 4-year B.Tech program + 1 year at sea. Candidates graduate with both a commission as a Sub-Lieutenant in the Navy and an engineering degree. The INA also trains cadets from friendly foreign nations. This is the most academically intensive of the four entries.

Air Force Academy Dundigal — 74 Weeks (~1.5 Years)

The AFA in Dundigal, Hyderabad trains pilots, navigators, and ground duty officers. Flying branch training includes actual flying hours on training aircraft — one of the most sought-after experiences in defence careers. Candidates are commissioned as Flying Officers in the Indian Air Force. Flying medical standards are the most stringent of all four entries — eyesight, colour vision, and physical fitness requirements are extremely strict.

Which CDS Entry Should You Choose?

Choose IMA if: You want a lifetime Army career with full pension, are under 24, and have a graduation degree in any stream. IMA is the gold standard for Army officers.

Choose OTA if: You are female (only option), or you’re older (up to 25), or you’re open to a 10–14 year service with option to convert to civilian life at 30–35. Also good as a backup option alongside IMA.

Choose Naval Academy if: You’re passionate about the sea service and have an engineering background. The 5-year training + B.Tech degree makes this an exceptional combination. Age limit is tighter (under 22).

Choose Air Force Academy if: Flying is your passion. The AFA flying branch is the most glamorous career in defence but requires strict medicals. Check IAF medical standards before investing preparation time. Age limit: under 23 for Flying branch.
