Hardit AI - India First Defence Exam AI by NCA Academy

Route 1: NDA (National Defence Academy) — Best Route

The NDA exam conducted by UPSC is India’s most prestigious defence entry route after 12th. It leads to a permanent commission as an officer in the Army, Navy, or Air Force.

  • Eligibility: Class 12 appearing or passed; Age 16.5–19.5 years; PCM for Army and Navy, any stream for Air Force
  • Exam: Written (Maths + GAT) → Medical → SSB interview
  • Training: 3 years at NDA Khadakwasla + 1 year at service academy
  • Commission: Lieutenant (Army) / Sub-Lieutenant (Navy) / Flying Officer (Air Force)
  • Key advantage: Youngest officer entry, full permanent career, highest prestige

Apply via the UPSC official website. NDA is notified twice a year (April and September exams).

Route 2: TES (Technical Entry Scheme)

TES is a direct entry for PCM students with high marks — no written exam required. Selection is based on merit in Class 12 boards + SSB interview.

  • Eligibility: PCM in Class 12 with minimum 70% aggregate; Age 16.5–19.5 years
  • Process: Apply → Shortlisted on merit → SSB interview → Medical
  • Training: 5 years at CME Pune or MCTE Mhow or MCEME Secunderabad
  • Commission: Lieutenant (Technical branch)
  • Key advantage: No written UPSC exam — merit-based shortlisting only

Check the Join Indian Army official website for TES notification dates.

Route 3: Agniveer (Agnipath Scheme)

A 4-year contract as a soldier in the Army, Navy, or Air Force. Minimum Class 10 for most categories; Class 12 required for some technical/clerk categories. Only 25% are retained permanently after 4 years. Good as a first step into the armed forces if NDA is not an option due to age or eligibility. Age: 17.5–21 years.

Route 4: NCC Special Entry

NCC ‘C’ Certificate holders with 50%+ in graduation (not after 12th directly) can apply for Special Entry via SSB — no written exam. This route requires completing graduation first, making it a post-graduate route. However, NCC training during Class 11–12 (to achieve ‘C’ certificate) makes this a path to plan for in school.

Comparison Table: All Routes After 12th

RouteEducationAgeExam?Commission?
NDAClass 12 (PCM/any)16.5–19.5Yes (UPSC)Yes — Permanent
TESClass 12 PCM (70%+)16.5–19.5No (merit-based)Yes — Permanent
AgniveerClass 10/1217.5–21Yes (Agniveer exam)No — 4-year contract
NCC SpecialGraduation (NCC ‘C’)19–25No (SSB only)Yes — Short Service

Which Route is Best for You?

If you are in Class 11 or 12 with PCM: NDA is your best path. It provides permanent commission, the youngest entry age, and the most prestigious career. If you have 70%+ in PCM and don’t want to take a written exam: apply for TES in parallel with NDA. Agniveer is not recommended as a primary choice if you are NDA-eligible — it leads to a fundamentally different (and less secure) career outcome.

How to Start Preparing Now

For NDA, start with a structured coaching program that covers both the written exam (Maths + GAT) and SSB interview preparation. The earlier you start, the more attempts you have before the upper age limit. Our guides to NDA 6-month study plan and best books for NDA 2026 are good starting points. For current recruitment notifications, check the Join Indian Army official portal and UPSC website regularly.
