YANBU OIL HUB: Saudi Red Sea terminal under Houthi threat

Yanbu Oil Hub: Why Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Terminal Matters for India

Quick answer: Yanbu is Saudi Arabia’s main oil export terminal on the Red Sea. It sits at the western end of the East-West (Petroline) pipeline, which allows Saudi crude to avoid the Strait of Hormuz. On 5 November 2026, Saudi authorities issued danger alerts for Yanbu because Yemen’s Houthi militia was still attacking the kingdom.

Why Yanbu is in the news

According to Reuters, Saudi Arabia issued alerts on Thursday, 5 November 2026, warning of possible danger in Yanbu as the Iran-aligned Houthis kept up their attacks. These attacks have opened another front in the wider US-Israeli war on Iran. The Saudi-led coalition said it destroyed a Houthi missile fired towards Medina, and emergency alerts were also issued for Sharurah near the Yemen border. Reuters noted that the Houthis had not claimed any attack on the kingdom that day.

The alert is part of a larger escalation. As reported by Euronews, renewed fighting since July 2026 broke a truce that had lasted years. The Houthis declared a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia and took control of stretches of Yemen’s Red Sea coast. In September, France said it would send soldiers, radars and air-defence systems to protect Yanbu. Britain said in October that its fighter jets would fly defensive missions over Saudi cities.

Key facts about Yanbu

  • Location: a city and governorate in Medina Province of western Saudi Arabia, on the Red Sea coast. After Jeddah, it is the second-largest Saudi city on the Red Sea.
  • Ports: the province’s only two ports are both in Yanbu: Yanbu Commercial Port and King Fahd Industrial Port.
  • Industrial city: in 1975 the Saudi government named Yanbu one of two new industrial centres, alongside Al Jubail in the Eastern Province.
  • Role: the kingdom’s main crude export terminal on the Red Sea, with large storage and refining facilities. It also gives Saudi Arabia a route for shipping oil towards Europe.

The Red Sea and India’s crude imports

The Red Sea lies between the Arabian Peninsula and Africa and is an inlet of the Indian Ocean. In the south it opens to the ocean through the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait and the Gulf of Aden. In the north, the Gulf of Suez leads to the Suez Canal. Because Yanbu lies inside this sea, a tanker leaving it for India still has to pass Bab-el-Mandeb, where the Houthis now pose a threat.

This matters a great deal to India. Open Magazine reported in March 2026 that India imports more than 88 per cent of the crude it needs, and that about half of those imports normally pass through Hormuz. In the same month, ThePrint reported that Saudi crude for India, which used to load at east-coast terminals and sail through Hormuz, was being shifted to Red Sea ports through the East-West pipeline. The Yanbu route was a lifeline when Hormuz was disrupted, but it is now under threat too. India keeps strategic crude reserves at Mangalore, Padur and Visakhapatnam.

Exam angle: how NDA, CDS and CAPF can ask this

  • NDA and CDS map questions often test chokepoints such as Hormuz, Bab-el-Mandeb and Suez. Learn which water bodies each one connects.
  • You may be asked which countries border the Red Sea or which ports lie on it, for example Yanbu and Jeddah on the Saudi coast.
  • Energy-security questions can cover India’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve sites and its main crude suppliers.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Yanbu important for Saudi oil exports?

Yanbu is the kingdom’s main crude export terminal on the Red Sea. Oil reaches it through the East-West pipeline, so it does not have to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

Why did Saudi Arabia issue alerts for Yanbu in November 2026?

On 5 November 2026, Saudi Arabia warned of possible danger in Yanbu as the Houthis kept attacking the kingdom. The same day, the coalition said it had destroyed a missile aimed at Medina.

How long is the East-West pipeline?

It runs about 1,201 km from Abqaiq in the Eastern Province to Yanbu. Its stated capacity was raised to about 7 million barrels per day in 2026.

How does the Yanbu crisis affect India?

When Hormuz was disrupted in 2026, Saudi crude for India was moved to Red Sea loadings. Threats to Yanbu and Bab-el-Mandeb now put that backup route at risk as well.
