Sainik Schools are residential schools run by the Sainik Schools Society under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. Established by V.K. Krishna Menon in 1961, they were designed to prepare boys (and now girls) for the National Defence Academy (NDA) and other defence service entries.

Sainik Schools admit students at two levels:

Note: Girls have been admitted to Sainik Schools since 2021 following a Government of India policy change. Several schools now have full girl cadet batches.


AISSEE – All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination 2026

The central admission exam is called AISSEE (All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination), conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

There is no interview in the Sainik School selection process. Written exam + medical = final result.

Start 6 Months Before the Exam

Mathematics (most important subject — carries maximum marks):

A: Yes. Girls can now appear for AISSEE and have dedicated seats at several Sainik Schools including Vrindavan, Bijapur, and others.

Q: Is Sainik School admission only for defence families?
A: No. Any Indian child of the right age can appear. Defence ward category gets fee concession and reserved seats, but general category students can absolutely get in on merit.

Q: Is there any age relaxation for SC/ST/OBC?
A: SC/ST candidates get 2-year relaxation in age limit. OBC relaxation varies by school.
