Every year, thousands of students clear the NDA written exam and SSB interview — but few truly know what awaits them inside the gates of the National Defence Academy at Khadakwasla, Pune. This is not a college. It is one of the most demanding, transformative, and prestigious military academies in the world. Here is an honest, complete guide to life at NDA.
About NDA – A Quick Overview
The National Defence Academy (NDA) is a joint services tri-services academy located at Khadakwasla, near Pune, Maharashtra. It trains cadets for all three services — Army, Navy, and Air Force — under one roof. After NDA, cadets proceed to their respective service academies for pre-commission training.
- Established: 1954
- Location: Khadakwasla, Pune (Maharashtra)
- Area: 7,015 acres
- Course Duration: 3 years (6 terms of 6 months each)
- Strength: Approximately 1,800 cadets per course
- Affiliated to: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) — B.Sc/B.A. degree awarded
NDA is consistently ranked among the world’s finest military academies, alongside West Point (USA) and Sandhurst (UK).
When Does a New Cadet Join NDA?
NDA training starts with the induction of a new course — referred to by its number (e.g., 147th Course, 148th Course etc.). Two courses join NDA each year: one in January and one in July, corresponding to NDA 1 and NDA 2 exam cycles.
A cadet’s journey begins not with academics — but with PT Zero.
PT Zero – The First 3 Weeks
Before regular training begins, all new cadets go through PT Zero — an intensive physical conditioning phase that breaks old civilian habits and builds basic military fitness.
- Wakeup at 5:00 AM sharp
- Physical Training (PT) for 2 hours — running, obstacle courses, gymnastics
- Drill (marching) for 2 hours
- Swimming sessions
- Introduction to uniform, etiquette, and military bearing
- Ragging (within regulated limits) by senior cadets is part of tradition — it builds mental toughness
By the end of PT Zero, most cadets have lost 3–5 kg, gained real fitness, and begun forming the bonds that last a lifetime.
Daily Routine at NDA
Life at NDA is rigidly structured. Every hour is accounted for:
| Time | Activity |
|---|---|
| 05:30 | Reveille (wake up) |
| 05:45–07:15 | Physical Training (PT) / Games / Drill |
| 07:15–08:00 | Personal time, bath, breakfast |
| 08:00–13:30 | Academic classes (6 periods) |
| 13:30–14:30 | Lunch and rest |
| 14:30–17:30 | Compulsory games / sports / adventure |
| 17:30–18:30 | Free time / squadron activities |
| 18:30–19:30 | Dinner |
| 19:30–21:30 | Study hours (self-study / prep classes) |
| 22:00 | Lights out |
No exceptions. Cadets who miss PT, miss meals, or skip classes face disciplinary action. Discipline is not optional — it is the foundation of NDA life.
The Squadron System
NDA is divided into 18 Squadrons, each named after military heroes:
- Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo…
- Hunter, Vikrant, Hamla, Shikari…
A cadet belongs to their squadron for the full 3 years. The squadron is their family — they eat together, compete together, and are judged together. Inter-squadron competitions in sports, academics, and drill are fiercely contested.
The Best Squadron Trophy is the most coveted award at NDA — winning it is a matter of immense pride.
Academics at NDA
Despite being a military academy, academic standards at NDA are serious. Cadets pursue a B.Sc or B.A. degree from JNU (awarded on course completion).
Streams:
- Science stream: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science
- Humanities stream: History, Political Science, Economics, Geography
Additional subjects (all cadets):
- Military Studies
- Physical Education
- English
- Foreign Languages (introduced in later terms)
Exams are held termly. Cadets who fail academics repeatedly are put on academic probation. Persistent failure leads to relegation (repeating a term) or in extreme cases, exit from NDA.
Academic periods are taught by civilian professors (NDA has its own academic faculty) and military instructors. The standard is genuine — not watered down.
Physical Training & Sports
Physical excellence is central to NDA life. Every cadet trains daily and must clear periodic Physical Efficiency Tests (PET).
Sports at NDA:
Every cadet must play one game competitively. Options include:
– Football, Hockey, Basketball, Volleyball
– Boxing, Wrestling, Judo, Karate
– Squash, Tennis, Swimming
– Rowing, Sailing, Horse riding
Equitation (horse riding) is compulsory for Army cadets. Swimming is compulsory for all — cadets who can’t swim learn at NDA.
Physical Efficiency Test (PET) Standards:
- 100m sprint
- Long jump, High jump
- Rope climbing
- Push-ups, Sit-ups
Failing PET has serious consequences — remedial PT, restricted privileges.
Adventure Training
NDA is not just a classroom and a drill square. Adventure is built into the curriculum:
- Gliding: Every NDA cadet learns to fly a glider — a unique experience
- Trekking: Himalayan and Western Ghats treks
- Rock climbing at NDA’s dedicated wall and nearby ranges
- Water sports: Sailing, kayaking on Khadakwasla Lake
- Skydiving (for advanced cadets)
- Obstacle courses including the legendary Burma Bridge
Military Training
Beyond sports and academics, NDA trains cadets in basic military skills:
- Weapon training: Handling, firing, and maintenance of service rifles
- Map reading and navigation: Compass, terrain, night navigation
- Drill: Ceremonial and tactical drill — NDA cadets execute some of India’s most precise parade drills
- Field craft: Camouflage, patrolling, ambush techniques
- Leadership exercises: Cadets rotate through command positions in training exercises
- Naval and Air Force orientation: All three services get cross-training exposure
Privileges System – Termer vs Senior Cadet
NDA has a strict hierarchy based on term (semester):
| Term | Status | Privileges |
|---|---|---|
| 1st–2nd term | Junior (Teri) | Minimal — restricted movement, parade duties |
| 3rd–4th term | Intermediate | More freedom, reduced fatigues |
| 5th–6th term | Senior (Duji/Tiji) | Maximum privileges, leadership roles |
Senior cadets hold positions of responsibility — Under Officer (UO), Senior Under Officer (SUO). The Senior Under Officer of the best squadron is effectively the most prestigious non-commissioned position among cadets.
Food at NDA
NDA food is legendary — and plentiful. Cadets burn thousands of calories daily and the mess caters accordingly.
- Breakfast: Poha/upma/eggs/bread/fruit + tea or milk
- Lunch: Dal, sabzi, rice, roti, curd, seasonal vegetables
- Dinner: Similar to lunch with non-veg options on designated days
- Special meals on Sundays and festivals
Each squadron has its own mess. Inter-mess food competition is taken seriously — the Best Mess Trophy is contested annually.
Passing Out Parade (POP)
After 3 years, NDA cadets graduate in the Passing Out Parade — one of India’s most spectacular military ceremonies.
- Held bi-annually on the NDA grounds
- Parents, dignitaries, and senior officers attend
- Cadets march in immaculate precision
- The outgoing batch receives their graduation certificates
- The Chief of Defence Staff or a senior service chief takes the salute
- After POP, cadets proceed to IMA (Army), INA (Navy), or AFA (Air Force) for pre-commission training
What NDA Produces
NDA is not just a school — it is a transformation. Cadets enter as boys and girls. They leave as officers. After 3 years:
- Physically: You will be among the fittest people in India
- Mentally: Stress, sleep deprivation, competition — all build extraordinary mental resilience
- Leadership: You will have led teams under pressure more times than most people do in a lifetime
- Network: Your course-mates and squadron brothers/sisters will be your family for life
Former NDA alumni include Field Marshals, Chiefs of Staff, Presidents, and one of India’s most decorated officers. The bond among NDA alumni — the NDA spirit — is real and lifelong.
